Bishop's Monthly Newsletter

January, 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A Blessed Epiphanytide to you all!

This newsletter comes to you with the hope and prayer that you are all well and staying warm through this period of severe cold weather. Rumor does have it that Spring is on the way. We will just need to be patient.

Diocesan News

Synod Planning.

Our 2014 diocesan synod will be hosted by St. Elizabeth's Anglican Church in Tuxedo, New York. Linnea will be sending out preliminary information regarding dates and hotel information. It has been several years since our synod was held at St. Elizabeth's and several clergy and delegates have never visited the beautiful church in Tuxedo. I know it will be a memorable event and I am looking forward to being with the diocesan family at our next synod. Many thanks to St. Elizabeth's for offering to host this important event in the life of our diocese.

The Rev. John Corcoran, R.I.P.

It is always sad to report the passing of a member of our church family. Father John Corcoran passed to eternal life earlier this month. Father John was a gregarious priest, a man with great good humor and a wonderful Irish brogue. His funeral Mass was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. January 25, 2014 at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Portland, Maine. "Rest eternal, grant him, O Lord, and light perpetual shine upon him."

The Rev. Ian Dunn will be installed rector of St. Thomas Anglican Church in Ellsworth, Maine on March 8, 2014. This is a rescheduled date. The earlier January date was deemed too problematic, weather-wise (wise move indeed!) We pray for the continued ministry of Father Dunn and the parish.

Episcopal Visits.

Please note the new, updated schedule of episcopal visits that has just been released.

Clericus.

Our March clericus has been scheduled to meet on March 20-1 at Graymoor in Garrison, New York. This particular clericus is open to clergy and lay members of our diocese, as well as visitors who may be seeking a greater knowledge of our common life and witness. More information will be forthcoming from Father Moody.

Religious Education Sunday.

A collection will be taken at our parish churches on March 9 for religious education. Our diocesan religious education fund has been used up over the past several years and needs to be replenished. Please ask parishioners to place envelopes marked "religious education" in the collection plates. Any such collections should be sent to Kathy Lippman, our diocesan treasurer. Three men in our diocese have expressed an interest in attending a three-year seminary program. These funds will be used to support their educational programs.

National Church News

The Anglican Province of America, our sister jurisdiction, will be hosting a national clericus gathering in Dunwoody, Georgia beginning Monday, January 27 and extending through Thursday, January 30. During the course of the week, the Reconciliation Committee, chaired by our own Bishop Langberg, will meet to discuss areas of practical agreement, such as canons and other aspects whereby our two churches may reach agreement. In addition, Bishops Haverland and Scarlett will join the bishops of the ACA and APA for informal discussions around areas of mutual cooperation. This is another in a series of meetings designed to promote eventual unity among Classical Anglicans. Bishops Marsh, Williams, Hiles and Langberg will attend from the Diocese of the Northeast. Please keep all in your prayers during this exciting time of opportunity for the members of Christ's church.
